Chronic Halitosis (Bad Breath) Information and Remedies
Halitosis is the technical term to describe unpleasant breath odors, also known as “bad breath” and is usually noticeable during exhalation. Chronic Halitosis is used to describe persistent halitosis and reoccurs even after cleansing and treatment and is the third most common reason why people seek dental aid after tooth decay and gum disease.
In most cases halitosis occurs inside the mouth itself and is treatable, transient halitosis is a problem for many people and varies in severity, usually after a long period of fasting, after waking up and after eating certain smelly food such as garlic, meat, cheese etc.
Chronic halitosis is more of a problem and is either more pungent or done not go away, and can affect the persons social life, due to the inability to get intimate with a mate or have friends. As well as professional and business relations.
Tongue
Most common cause of chronic halitosis is tongue bacteria which release malodorous compounds and fatty acids which have a strong smell. Tongue bacteria accounts for around 80% of halitosis and is treatable. Tongue Bacteria is naturally occurring, however the growing in bacteria population can cause them to be over-active they react with volatile sulphur compounds (VSCs) and release by-products which are extremely pungent.
A good way to keep tongue halitosis under control is to cleanse the tongue to remove food debris and bacteria build up.

Teeth
For many people with large gaps in their teeth problems chronic halitosis can set in when food debris gets stuck in-between teeth which harbours bacteria, this usually occurs in-between the back teeth which is more difficult to floss and cannot be easily felt with the tongue. A thorough flossing regime or a waterpic can help eliminate chronic halitosis which occurs from the teeth.
Mouth
VSCs and bactera can exist in other areas in the mouth such as roof, under the tongue, near the gums etc. A good dental care regime can help combat halitosis of the mouth, however professional help may be required in some cases.
